Properties and action of shikimic acid
Smoothing properties – shikimic acid gently exfoliates dead skin cells, making the skin smooth, soft and ready to absorb other active ingredients.
Improved skin elasticity – The product supports collagen and elastin synthesis, which improves skin elasticity. Its firming effect makes the complexion look younger and healthier, with visible improvement in facial contours.
Anti-acne effect – shikimic acid has antibacterial properties, inhibiting the growth of bacteria responsible for skin inflammation, and also regulates sebum secretion, reducing the risk of pore clogging.
Brightening effect – the acid has the ability to inhibit the activity of tyrosinase – the enzyme responsible for melanin production.
Application
Shikimic acid is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive, oily, combination, and acne-prone. It can be used in both daily skincare and professional beauty treatments that require higher concentrations of the acid.
The use of shikimic acid depends on the cosmetic formulation and the concentration of the substance. Products with lower concentrations (up to 2-5%) are intended for everyday use, while higher concentrations are recommended for professional cosmetic treatments. Shikimic acid can be used both morning and evening, with the caveat that daytime SPF should be used to protect the skin from UV radiation.
Contraindications to the use of shikimic acid include pregnancy, lactation, active skin infections, sunburn, antibiotic therapy, and skin diseases such as psoriasis or eczema.
