The maitake mushroom ( Grifola frondosa), also known as the leaf mushroom , is an edible wood-decaying fungus that grows on the roots and trunks of deciduous trees. It is a rare and protected species in Europe, but is also found and cultivated in Asia, where it is used in food preparation.
