What is a purge?
The name “rockrose” refers to plants of the genus Cistus, belonging to the Cistaceae family . It includes approximately 20 plants characterized by a rich content of biologically active substances and therapeutic activity, of which the most popular in Poland is rockrose ( Cistus incanus ).
Rockrose is primarily known for its high antioxidant content , which gives it strong health-promoting properties, used in both pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. The chemical composition of rockrose is dominated by compounds from the polyphenol group (flavonoids, tannins, proanthocyanidins, phenolic acids) and terpene compounds present in the essential oil.
The healing properties of rockrose
Cistus infusions and preserves are recommended primarily for their anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiproliferative, and immune-boosting effects. Supplements containing its leaves or herb are also recommended for the prevention of chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, and Alzheimer’s disease.
Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects
Thanks to its high polyphenol content, rockrose exhibits strong antioxidant properties. These compounds are characterized by their ability to scavenge free radicals, preventing their formation, and also exert a strong protective effect against oxidative stress. These properties are valued in the prevention of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases, as well as cancer. People taking rockrose infusions experienced improved lipid profiles – an increase in “good” HDL cholesterol and a decrease in triglyceride levels. In vitro studies, the essential oil demonstrated neuroprotective properties by inhibiting enzymes associated with the development of Alzheimer’s disease.
Its antioxidant activity also translates into anti-inflammatory and immune-boosting effects. Research indicates that the flavonoids present in its products, similarly to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) activity. As a result, they limit the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and accelerate the healing of inflammatory reactions.
